After Julia Toivonen of Australia gave birth to her child while only 27 weeks into her pregnancy, she created the L'il Aussie Prems Foundation to provide support for other parents dealing with a premature birth.
"You just don't realize how many people you can actually help. It's wonderful," she told the Herald Sun in 2013. "The journey doesn't end when you leave hospital, families need to feel they're not alone."
According to the CDC, births are considered premature when they occur before the 37th week of pregnancy. About 10 percent of births are affected.
To inspire hope for parents of premature babies, Toivonen's foundation recently launched the #foot4prems project, which features kids holding old photos of when they were born prematurely. The series was created in anticipation of their "Wear Green for Preemies Day" on April 13.
Here are 17 photos showing how far these kids have come since they were born.
