Photographer Recreates Photos Snapped By His Late Grandfather And It's Absolutely Beautiful

Fast forward 38 years and voilà!

Same places. Different people.

When the late grandfather of Christian Carollo, a Philadelphia-based photographer, snapped photos of his travels around the US, he hardly thought of how those spots would look almost four decades later. Or imagine his own grandchild revisiting them for that matter.

But for his latest photo series titled The Past Present project, Carollo did just that.

"It all started in October 2012 with a randomly selected box of slides that contained his photographs of the Oregon Coast, which is exactly where I would be traveling a week later," Carollo explained on the project's website. "Most of the images were scenic shots, but one shot displayed a building in the small coastal town of Winchester Bay. I wondered, what if I could replicate my grandfather's photograph 30 years later?"

The photographer now travels to different locations around the U.S. juxtaposing his grandfather's vintage photos with the locations where they were originally snapped.

It's funny to see how places changes in 38 years, or, sometimes... haven't at all.

Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1978 and 2014.

California's First Theatre in Monterey, California, in 1979 and 2015.

White Sands Visitor Center, New Mexico, in 1979 and 2014.

Excerpt from Carollo's grandmother's travel journal:

"Went into the park information center, saw some exhibitions in the Mexican style building (beams sticking out of the adobe flat roof houses) and went into the dunes on a paved road."

Groveland, California, in 1979 and 2015.

"When I entered the Iron Door Saloon, which happens to be the oldest saloon in California, I came across a man sitting at the bar who told me he was in 11th grade the year my grandfather's photo was taken," Carollo writes on his Instagram. "He went on to tell me that he and a few seniors used to park behind the bar and enjoy a few beers inside the bar after school. I believed him."

Jackson Square in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1978 and 2014.

Badlands National Park, South Dakota in 1981 and 2013.

Excerpt from Carollo's grandmother's travel journal:

"Up at 6:30, sunny & warm but the wind keeps it cool. With our simple setup we are quickly in order and breakfast under the "conistoga"-shade after washup."

Sutter’s Fort in Sacramento, California, in 1979 and 2015.

Yosemite National Park, California, 1979 and 2015.

Excerpt from Carollo's grandmother's travel journal:

"Entering Yosemite National Park at 12:40 — clean and cool air, the smell of pine & redwoods, stopping at several photo spots, going through the long long tunnel, into the valley itself."

Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, California, in 1979 and 2015.

Market Square Tavern in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1978 & 2014.

Lucia Lodge in Big Sur, California, in 1979 and 2015.

Excerpt from Carollo's grandmother's travel journal:

"Stopped at Lucia Lodge – one lonely spot on the rocks, but they had gas! We sat on their small open veranda in the sun, had coffee and apple pie, and watched the wide blue ocean."

Way to celebrate your grandparents. Simply gorgeous.
