Sometimes allowing kids to be kids means protecting them from the harshness of the world. Sometimes, it's easier to tell a lie — or, at the very least, withhold the truth — than it is to try to explain there's not enough money, or that a father is never coming back or that, yes, some days moms and dads need their own space to do their own things.
Using the Whisper app, an online platform where people can anonymously post their secrets and confessions, parents reveal the lies they have told their kids. But before you rush to judgement on these, consider what it might be like to have to endure the grief that comes with the loss of a spouse or the shame you might feel from not having enough money in the bank for Christmas presents. You might not feel ready to help your child bear the same fear and pain that you do.
You can always tell them the truth when they're older.
Share the little (and big) lies you've told your kids in the comments below.
