President Obama found a unique — and personal — way to thank America's educational professionals on Tuesday's Teacher Appreciation Day.
This year's annual occasion for honoring teachers fell on May 3, although the celebrations continue all week. The festivities for this day include Obama's recognition of the 2016 National Teacher of the Year, high school educator Jahana Hayes.
The president also paid tribute to his own fifth grade teacher, Mabel Hefty, with a special message to her and to teachers everywhere on Twitter. He even included a throwback picture.
Obama had previously recognized Hefty in an email last year.
"I credit my education to Ms. Mabel Hefty just as much as I would any institution of higher learning," Obama wrote. "She made every single student in that class feel special. And she reinforced that essential value of empathy that my mother and my grandparents had taught me. That is something that I carry with me every day as President."
