Obama's Poignant Response To Charlottesville Just Broke A Twitter Record

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin."

Following this weekend's violence at a White nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., former president Barack Obama shared a poignant response on Twitter, choosing to quote former South African president Nelson Mandela

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion," read the first tweet, posted Saturday. "People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."

The message clearly resonated with many who were reeling over the hate they had witnessed. In fact, the first of Obama's thread of three tweets, which featured a photograph of the former president smiling at a group of children in a window, has broken a Twitter record to become the most-liked tweet in history.

According to Mashable, the message earned more than 2 million likes by Tuesday afternoon, quickly becoming the second most-liked tweet, behind Ariana Grande's response to the bombing at her Manchester concert earlier this year. Then, just after 10 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday night, it reached the top spot. Currently, the tweet sits at more than 3 million likes.

It's also moving up the ranking of most-retweeted tweets, with Favstar showing that it's currently in fifth place. The top spot still belongs to the teenager who asked Wendy's for free chicken nuggets. Earlier this year, he dethroned Ellen DeGeneres' iconic Oscar selfie.

It may seem trivial, but the fact that Obama's message of love in the face of hate has received such a positive response is a heartening sign that the content of that message ultimately rings true. A like or a retweet may not change the world, but it can be a motivating reminder of what we're fighting for.
