'Dancing With The Stars' Just Crowned Its Very First Deaf Champion

Watch the stunning freestyle routine that won him the trophy.

Several months ago, Nyle DiMarco won season 22 of America's Next Top Model. Last night, he won season 22 of Dancing With the Stars. It would seem Nyle has a lucky number.

The 27-year-old was a standout this season, turning in amazing performances week after week with the help of his professional partner Peta Murgatroyd. He even participated in the show's first ever same-sex dance routine earlier this month.

But there was one thing that made Nyle's success in the competition even more impressive — he's deaf.

Watching Nyle nail the complex choreography of his weekly ballroom routines, it was easy to forget that he couldn't hear a single note of the music. He made it look totally effortless and proved that with hard work, anything is possible. While he isn't the first deaf contestant on the show (Marlee Matlin competed several years ago), he is the first to win.

Last night after accepting the mirror ball trophy, Nyle tweeted his excitement, thanking his partner and dedicating his win to the Deaf Community.

With both this win and his previous Top Model achievement, Nyle is proving that what makes you different doesn't have to be a limitation

And be sure to also check out Nyle and Peta's freestyle routine from Monday night. The pair danced to a haunting cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence" by Disturbed, and the results were stunning. It's no wonder fans voted to give them the trophy.
