Meet The New Marvel Superhero Inspired By The Nigerian Schoolgirls Who Were Kidnapped Three Years Ago

Here's to more diversity in the Marvel Universe.

There's a new Marvel superhero in town and she's about to inspire a generation of Nigerian (and non-Nigerian) girls.

Ngozi is the name of the new superhero who's the lead in a new comic called Blessing in Disguise, which is set in Lagos, a city in Nigeria. The story is set in the same universe as Marvel's Venomverse comic, where Ngozi exists alongside notable characters such as Deadpool and the Black Panther.

Blessing in Disguise is inspired by the schoolgirls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram –– a Nigerian militant group –– in the town of Chibok, Borno State, Nigeria back in 2014.



Nnedi Okorafor, the author of the comic and an English professor at the University at Buffalo in New York, said the girls motivated her to capture the essence of what it truly means to be a young Nigerian girl.

"They were normal girls who suddenly had to deal with a huge change in their lives … and their story of perseverance is so powerful," she said to Reuters. "Like many Nigerian girls, Ngozi comes in a small package but is strong-willed and determined."

Ngozi is joining the ranks of other diverse superheroes in the Marvel Universe, such as the newly established America Chavez character, its first-ever queer Latina superhero.

For Okorafor, Ngozi's status as another diverse character is just what she thinks the superhero universe needs.

"I'm a huge Wonder Woman fan, but we can really push it further when it comes to diversity," she said. "I'm not just talking about race and sexual orientation, but about having a range of personalities with different desires, dreams, and flaws. I don't only want to see badass female characters, I want to see much less predictable ones."
