Netflix knows exactly how many episodes it takes to get you to fall in love with their shows.
The streaming service wanted to see how many episodes deep the average person would have to be to get hooked on some of today's most popular shows. "Getting hooked" on a series meant that 70 percent of viewers who watched that episode would go on to complete season one.
So, it conducted a study.
Netflix looked at global streaming data from accounts that pressed play on season one of selected shows. Both Netflix original series and shows that began on other networks were included. Then, it analyzed which episode got people hooked for the rest of the season.
"Given the precious nature of primetime slots on traditional TV, a series pilot is arguably the most important point in the life of the show," said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix, in a press release about the findings. "However, in our research of more than 20 shows across 16 markets, we found that no one was ever hooked on the pilot. This gives us confidence that giving our members all episodes at once is more aligned with how fans are made."
The results were very interesting. Turns out, people get hooked on Orange is the New Black faster than Mad Men or How I Met Your Mother.
Here's how many episodes it takes to get hooked on some of today's most popular shows:
