Imgur contributor TalesFromTheReservation succeeded in scaring the popular photo-sharing community site half to death with an incredibly eerie story about growing up in Navajo country. He told the site about stories of encountering "Skinwalkers" — shapeshifting Navajo witches who have gained power by breaking cultural taboos — along the dark night roads, which keep many from traveling at night through Navajo country.
The story, which originally appeared as an answer to "what's the scariest thing that's ever happened to you?" on AskReddit, also included a comment by a now-deleted account that describes Skinwalkers as "Navajo Indian witch doctors presumed to be evil. They take on the forms of animals. Story has it, that if you're driving at night through a Navajo reservation, they will run along your car and knock on your window."
"If you look at them or acknowledge them, they will curse you and/or kill you."
Tales was kind enough to answer some questions from interested Imgurians (including myself) about Skinwalkers.
"I was asked by majority of you, "Do they only target Navajos?" Honestly, close to half the stories I know were from visiting teachers and nurses of all races," Tales writes in his follow-up. "Some had things happen before they knew what a skinwalker was. A traveling nurse once told me while walking home one night she heard a coworker telling her to turn around. The kicker? She said she knew that coworker was out of state visiting family for the week."
We reached out to Tales and he gave us permission to post his story, and we're happy to present it to you here.
