As an anti-LGBTQ organization criticizes Target for its inclusive bathroom policy, singer Miley Cyrus is standing up for the retail store with a positive message of acceptance.
A few weeks ago, North Carolina passed the controversial House Bill 2 (HB2), which restricts people who are transgender to using bathrooms designated for the gender listed on their birth certificate.
In response to the contentious law, Target announced last week that customers and employees are welcome to use whichever bathroom aligns with their gender identity. Target is among numerous other businesses that opposed the North Carolina bathroom bill.
"We welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity," Target said in a statement, according to CNN. "Everyone deserves to feel like they belong."
After Target adopted its inclusive bathroom policy, individuals with anti-LGBTQ views protested the retail store's decision. The American Family Association, a conservative activist group, organized a petition with more than 700,000 signatures from people pledging to boycott Target. The hashtag #BoycottTarget trended on social media.
Miley Cyrus weighed into the debate on Instagram, posting a message of tolerance and appreciation for Target, along with a photo of a #BoycottTarget article.
"Thank u Target for your acceptance of trans people and their restroom rights," Cyrus wrote on Instagram. "I hope the hearts of these prejudice boycotters can one day be as open as your mind!"
This message of support for Target should come as no surprise to fans of the pop star, as Cyrus has a long history of proudly supporting LGBTQ rights, including her #InstaPride campaign and her comments on being "gender diverse."
