One week after Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said that African Americans and Hispanics were "living in hell" during a debate, his running mate issued a similar comment that was widely panned as racially insensitive. During Tuesday's vice presidential debate, Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine repeated Trump's controversial remarks from 2015 when he referred to Mexicans as criminals and rapists.
This eventually prompted an awkward response from Gov. Mike Pence.
"Senator, you whipped out that Mexican thing again," Pence said.
To many on Twitter, "that Mexican thing" seemed a strange way to refer to widespread concern over the presidential candidate's disparaging description of Mexican immigrants and their contributions to American society. In response, they took to the social platform to redefine what the words "that Mexican thing" might better describe: their heritage, their pride, their ability to vote.
