If Microaggressions Inspired An Album, These Would Be The Hit Singles

"Recording my debut album, 'I don’t work here.' Featuring the hit singles, 'Yes, I do have a ticket. I’m the keynote speaker.'"

If you're a person of color, a woman, identify as queer, or belong to any other marginalized community, you may have experienced your fair share of microaggressions.

If you're unfamiliar with the term, microaggressions are casual everyday snubs and slights rooted in prejudice, discrimination, bias and stereotypes. They are the tiny, yet patronizing, things that happen on the regular, such as being followed around in a store because you're Black and therefore "don't belong there;" or having your career mansplained to you by a man who does not work in your field because of course you, a woman, have no idea what you're doing.

People experience such microaggressions way too often, but those who don't, barely notice their existence at all. To bring attention to microaggressions, one woman decided to bring a little humor to the issue through a tweet.

When Twitter user @ArlanWasHere joked about recording a music album inspired by the microaggressions she deals with on the daily, those who also experience microaggresssions pretty much replied with a unanimous "That's my jam!"

She kept the joke going by naming some of her upcoming singles and bonus tracks.

Obviously this quickly became a new genre and inspired others to share their own renditions. See our favorites below.

Mixtape dropping soon! (We hope.)

While the tweets give us a good laugh, the main point of them all is to show how nuanced prejudice is. Whether it's verbal or non-verbal, intentional or unintentional, microaggressions communicate hurtful, ignorant, and insulting assumptions. If the above tweets don't give you some insight on microaggressive behavior, practicing mindfulness, as well as consciously evaluating the reasons behind your perception.s surely will.
