These People Saying Good-Bye To Michelle Obama Had No Idea She Was Listening

Her final late-night appearance as first lady was an emotional one.

On Wednesday, Michelle Obama visited The Tonight Show for her final late-night appearance as first lady. Host Jimmy Fallon made sure to give her an emotional send-off, helping her surprise some of her biggest supporters as they shared what she's meant to them over the past eight years.

The show had fans stand in front of Mrs. Obama's portrait to record good-bye messages. Their words for her display just how much she has meant to this country, and how much we'll miss her when she and her family leave the White House.

"Because of you, I know that my race does not define who I am or what I can accomplish," one woman says.

A father shares that his daughter tried the salad bar at her school because of Mrs. Obama's promotion of healthy eating. There's even a mention of her and Fallon's memorable "Evolution of Mom Dancing" segment.

Of course, little did these fans know, the first lady was behind the curtain listening to them the entire time.

Once she revealed herself, there were plenty of tears and hugs, and even more "thank you" messages. It was a lovely way to say good-bye to a first lady who has had such a positive impact on so many people's lives.

During her interview, Mrs. Obama shared an inspiring message with Fallon about the future of kids in America. "When I think about the fact that some of them are afraid about what's to come," she said, according to The Daily Beast, "I don't want them to be afraid. I want them to embrace the future and know that the world is getting better. We have bumps in the road, we have ups and downs. But I want our kids to move forward, I don't care where they come from, with strength and with hope."
