When An Earthquake Survivor Was Rescued In Mexico, People Began Singing The National Anthem

"Sí se pudo."

Mexico continues to recover following the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck approximately 75 miles southeast of Mexico City on September 19 and devastated a good portion of the country, but even in the midst of such destruction, the people of Mexico are finding ways to remain hopeful and rebuild.

Take, for example, a short video clip shared by the City of Mexico Facebook page that was filmed less than one week after the earthquake hit. In the video, which you can see below, a crowd of people is gathered around a partially collapsed building singing the Mexican national anthem as rescuers free someone trapped by debris inside.

Even though it was nearly 11 p.m. local time, the crowd energetically sang the country's national anthem as the trapped person was brought to safety, and erupted in a chorus of cheers and applause once the rescue was complete.

According to HelloGiggles, the words to  the national anthem, the Himno Nacional de México, are particularly apropos and poignant given everything the country and its people have been through in recent weeks. A portion of the anthem translates to, "Dear homeland! Dear homeland! Your children swear to exhale breath in your cause. If the bugle in its belligerent (warlike) tone, summons them to fight with courage, you will get the olive garlands! They will have a memory of glory! You will get a laurel of victory! They will have a tomb of honor!"

And the show of solidarity didn't stop there. Once the anthem was finished the crowd began chanting "Sí se pudo," which translates to "Yes we can."

In the roughly two weeks since the earthquake struck, the people of Mexico have shown us how strong and compassionate they are, be it through heroic rescue efforts, a creative team of volunteers, or generous donations from Mexican citizens who want to aid the recovery efforts in any way they can.
