During Their Record-Breaking Basketball Shot, These Guys Discovered Something Amazing

Science can be pretty fascinating.

Science can be a funny thing.

A few weeks ago, you may remember the guys who hit the highest basketball shot ever. Well, when they were going for their 415 foot shot, they also discovered something a bit more complex.

Look how the ball moves when its dropped without spin.

Now watch what happens when they drop another basketball, but with backspin.

But why?

The effect you're seeing on the ball is known as the Magnus Effect, something that moves all rotating balls and cylinders as they float through the air. As a ball picks up speed, air on the front of the ball forces it to pick up speed, while air on the back helps push it forward.

It effects soccer balls, too.
