Madeline Stuart, First Professional Model With Down Syndrome, Launches Her Own Clothing Line

"Between claps and cheers, the room was moved with joyous tears."

In May of 2015, Madeline Stuart, a teen with Down syndrome, hoped that by becoming a model, she could help change the way the world viewed people with disabilities.

And so she did.

By July, Stuart landed a campaign for the fashion company everMaya. And by September, Stuart would walk at New York Fashion Week (NYFW).

Now, less than a year later, Stuart, the world's first professional model with Down syndrome, can add "designer" to her resume. Her new clothing label, 21 Reasons Why, launched at NYFW 2017. Stuart joins other designers breaking down barriers, such as Isabella Springmühl, the first designer with Down syndrome to show at London Fashion Week.

"[Stuart] set tears to the catwalk at Art Hearts Fashion Runway [Wednesday] night at the Angel Orensanz Center," reads a press release following the show. "Between claps and cheers, the room was moved with joyous tears, as [Stuart] walked out first, proudly representing her 21st Chromosome. Her big smile displayed her latest and boldest career move to date."

According to her website, the name, 21 Reasons Why, was inspired by Stuart's "passion to find reasons to better ourselves, be more inclusive, healthier, and why we should celebrate life, whilst taking pride in her 21st chromosome. [Stuart's'] mission is to continue to spread her message of inclusion; that there are no boundaries regardless of your age, size, race, height, or disability."
