What Our Lives Would Look Like If We All Lived In A Video Game

How good of a gamer are you?

Oliver Emberton is a writer, pianist, programmer, artist, and entrepreneur. He also created a whole separate page for his prosperous personality, because why not? Oliver also has a blog where he shares thoughts on getting the most from life.

One of his posts is especially connected to that. Life Is A Game. This Is Your Strategy Guide is a wonderful piece on how to win the game of your life. Here's a short summary of it so press start and let's go!

Life is a tough game and we all play it. This is a strategy guide to make winning a little bit easier.

It all starts by getting an assigned character and going through a bunch of tutorial missions. For 15 years or so.

To unlock life's achievements, you have to level up your skills. Some are more important than others, so choose carefully.

You won't always have enough resources. It's not a bug, just a little something to make the game more interesting.

Pro tip: keep an extra eye on your willpower. Every decision you make costs willpower, so it gets harder to make a good choice when the level is low. There are some hacks to boost it, though: take good care of your physiological needs (eat, sleep, have fun); prioritize your tasks; reduce choices and eliminate distractions.

Choosing the right tasks at the right time will get you to a next level. Some affect your state...

...while others influence your skills.

Skills unlock achievements, remember?

OLIVER EMBERTON

Well, not all of them...

Combinations of skills are the most effective. Being pretty good at several things is often better than mastering just one.

Everyone knows that having a sidekick makes the game easier. But don't rush into it.

To get the best of the game, you have to become your best self. A weak, tired and unskilled player is not attractive. You must keep you willpower lower and exercise a variety of skills before you can unlock this achievement.

One of the hardest will be the money level. You may have to restart a few times before getting it right.

Again, you can hack around it. Basic rules are: live within your means (don't buy things you don't need with money you don't have); save a little; choose career and environment thoughtfully; compound your winnings into more assets, i.e. invest.

Now all of your stats are being summed up. You think you did well?

Unlocking the Later Life achievement is pretty important but depends entirely on your game strategy. Are you a happy, healthy, fulfilled and winning player? There's not much you can do about it now. All players die after about 29,000 days, or 80 years. There is no cheat code for this.
