NBA fans everywhere were shocked to hear the news.
Lamar Odom, one of the most beloved players the NBA had ever seen, was allegedly found inside a brothel, unconscious, with cocaine in his system
The former NBA Champion is still in critical condition in the hospital, fighting for his life. But as the news broke, headlines all over the country began to refer to Odom, who is separated from wife Khloe Kardashian, as a "reality TV star."
For any sports fan, the title is peculiar almost to the point of being offensive. Yes, his wife is a famed Kardashian — but Odom is an athletic hero, and inspiration to thousands of children all over the world. He, as a player who was largely absent of scandal and a proud role model for the NBA, is much, much more than a reality TV star. And since he left the NBA, things have not been easy for the 35-year-old.
So, SportsCenter anchor Scott Van Pelt decided to remind everyone who he really is.
"Kardashian reality star?" he asked his audience. "No, no, no, no. Lamar Odom, unlike those for whom fame is oxygen, whose fame comes in the absence of accomplishment, his fame was earned. As sixth Man Of The Year, as multiple NBA champion, as result of his significant role with the Los Angeles Lakers teams... Everyone across the league, it seems, loves the man."
"Passed out in a brothel makes for a hell of a headline and I'm sure quite a juicy episode of TV," Van Pelt added. "But stripped to the foundation it's just incredibly sad, all of it."
