"The following contains graphic content that may be emotionally unsettling but reflects the reality of what is happening daily on college campuses," reads the opening text on Lady Gaga's new black-and-white music video, "Til It Happens To You."
According to a 2015 report from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in five women are sexually assaulted while attending college.
One in five.
Gaga's video highlights very real scenarios any college woman could encounter. From hanging out with a friend in a dorm room or dancing in a crowd at a packed house party, the scenes on campus are relatable and all too familiar.
But halfway through the video, things take a horrific turn. In each scene, men use force or drugs to sexually assault different women in different places.
But in the aftermath of such incredible darkness, the narrative finds a light...
With the support of their friends, the women find the courage to open up, recognize their worthiness, unite, and find strength in numbers.
Diane Warren, the video's composer, told The Huffington Post in an interview:
"It seems like it's all coming out of this dark closet it was in. It was secretive. It wasn't what you talked about. But now, people are saying, 'We're not going to be victims anymore, we're going to call you on it, whether it's on a campus or anywhere...'"
It's On Us, an organization calling on the public to "create an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported," among other actions, gives people the opportunity to pledge "to help keep women and men safe from sexual assault."
"It is a promise not to be a bystander to the problem, but to be a part of the solution," the website explains.
Finally, Lady Gaga tweeted:
A portion of the proceeds from Lady Gaga's music video will be donated to organizations helping survivors of sexual assault.
