Kate Winslet's Story About Alan Rickman's Generosity Makes Us Miss Him Even More

"If there was one word I could use to really describe Al, it would be kind."

This year has seen the deaths of countless talented and beloved celebrities, one of the earliest of which was actor Alan Rickman in January. Rickman passed away of cancer at age 69, leaving behind dozens of memorable performances — including as the iconic Professor Snape in the Harry Potter series.

Actress Kate Winslet, who starred with Rickman in both Sense and Sensibility (1995) and A Little Chaos (2014), remembers her late friend fondly for his kindness and generosity. In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, Winslet pays tribute to Rickman nearly a year after his death by telling a touching story that only makes us miss him even more.

"He was always a great big softy," she says. "If there was one word I could use to really describe Al, it would be kind. He was so kind."

She goes on to share how Rickman frequently took advantage of his wealth from the Harry Potter films to give back to his friends — with good humor to boot:

"At Al's memorial, Juliet Stevenson told the story of how whenever Al would go out to supper and anyone else would try and pay, he would somehow have phoned ahead or slipped his credit card ahead of the meal so no one even got a look at the check. He'd just say, 'I've got two words for you: Harry Potter.' And he became known for doing that."

When news of Rickman's death first broke earlier this year, Winslet expressed a similar sentiment, calling the actor "a warm-hearted puppy dog, who would do anything for anyone if it made them happy."

Indeed, Rickman continued to show his incredible generosity even after his death, as he left £100,000 in his will to charities supporting the arts and facial reconstruction. Additionally, only a few months before he died, he recorded a voiceover for a viral video raising money for refugees.

Rickman may be known for playing Hogwarts' meanest professor, but in real life it sounds like he was anything but.
