Justin Trudeau Meets The Baby Syrian Refugees Named After Him

The two Justin Trudeaus were both in Calgary this weekend.

Last May, a Syrian couple who arrived in Canada as refugees in 2016 named their baby boy after the person to whom they were the most grateful for their new life: Justin Trudeau. Their story went viral and came full circle this weekend when the Canadian prime minister and his miniature met in person.

The two Justin Trudeaus were both in Calgary on Saturday for the city's annual Stampede. The prime minister's photographer Adam Scotti captured the moment the two met β€” although the two-month-old Justin Trudeau Adam Bilan appears to have slept through the entire interaction.

Baby Justin Trudeau's parents Muhammad and Afraa Bilan came to Canada from Damascus after learning they were being tracked by authorities in Syria. Since December 2015, when Trudeau greeted the first group of Syrians arriving in Toronto, more than 40,000 refugees have been resettled in Canada.

"We love this man, we appreciate him," Afraa Bilan told The Star of Trudeau in May. "He helped a lot of refugees. He's the reason we are in Canada."
