Heartbreaking Ad Shows What Happens When A Little Girl Discovers A Lonely Man On The Moon

That's the holiday spirit.

On an ordinary night, a curious girl looks into her telescope and discovers something extraordinary.

Right there, on the surface of the moon, sits a lonely grey-haired man on a bench in front of his tiny grey house, where no one else lives.

Eager to contact him, the girl, named Lily, waves for his attention, holds up a sign, and even tries sending a paper airplane out of her window.

Alas, the moon is too far, and Lily can't seem to reach the lonely man.

But on Christmas, when inevitably all the magic happens, the lonely man gets a special delivery — a telescope wrapped in Christmas paper — floating over from the Earth with the help of some festive balloons.

For the first time the man's expression is warm; his smile illuminates as he opens the package and holds the telescope straight towards Earth.

And there, in the distance, is his new friend, Lily, waving back at him.

This, all set to "Half the World Away," an Oasis cover by Aurora, is department store chain John Lewis' latest Christmas ad (or as Mashable calls it, "its annual tear-jerker"). 

At the end of the advertisement, the screen reads "Show someone they're loved this Christmas," as the once-lonely man waves back to Earth, presumably feeling quite loved.

And at this point — if you're not welling up with tears already — you're done for. Grab the tissues. 

Moreover, the ad aims to raise awareness for Age UK, an organization that supports the elderly and works to make the most out of their later years.

"Over 1 million older people haven't spoken to a friend, neighbour or family member for at least a month," Age UK reports.

Moreover, AgingCare.com cites a study from the University of California, San Francisco that says in regards to aging Americans: 

"People 60-years-old and older who reported feeling lonely saw a 45 percent increase in their risk for death. Isolated elders also had a 59 percent greater risk of mental and physical decline than their more social counterparts."

But Age UK works to reduce these emotions through their "befriending services," developing friendships between the elderly and a volunteer companion.

And according to The Guardian, John Lewis will "encourage staff and customers to join up with their local branch of the charity to care for elderly people who might otherwise be alone over the holiday," with the potential to create a new global network of volunteers willing and able to support the cause.

And if that doesn't spark a little holiday spirit, we don't know what will.
