While campaigning for Hillary Clinton in Sarasota, Fla., on Monday, Vice President Joe Biden took a moment to address comments made by Donald Trump earlier in the day regarding veteran suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Trump spoke to veterans in Herndon, Va., and answered a question about whether he would support "a more holistic approach" to solving the mental health issues many veterans face when they return home. Trump replied that he would, but his response has caused controversy. Here's what he said:
When you talk about the mental health problems, when people come back from war and combat — and they see things that maybe a lot of the folks in this room have seen many times over and you're strong and you can handle it, but a lot of people can't handle it. And they see horror stories. They see events that you couldn't see in a movie. Nobody would believe it.
Many on social media criticized Trump for suggesting that veterans suffering from PTSD aren't "strong."
Trump's campaign, as well as the veteran who asked the question, claim the candidate's words were taken out of context and twisted by the media, but Vice President Biden disagrees. He repeated Trump's comments to the crowd in Florida and asked, "Where in the hell is he from?"
He spoke of his late son Beau, who served in Iraq and returned "a highly decorated veteran." He then told the story of being asked to pin a silver medal on a soldier who had risked his life to pull someone out of a burning vehicle. The young man apparently told him, "He died, Mr. Vice President. I don't want the medal."
Biden raised his voice to ask, "How many nights does that kid go to sleep seeing that image in his head?"
Each day, Biden explained, he has his staff update him on the number of troops who have died and were wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq. "Every one of those warriors left behind an entire family, a community, for us," he said, adding that more than 200,000 return home "with unseen wounds."
"I don't think he was trying to be mean," Biden said of Trump. "He is just so thoroughly, completely uninformed."
