Jenny Lewis has spent the last five years photographing new mothers within 24 hours of giving birth.
Lewis explained the goal of "One Day Young" in a press release:
"My aim was to capture the extraordinary bonding, warmth and strength between mother and infant," she says. "In fact the whole range of amazing emotions felt at that time, as the mothering instinct kicks in."
The book contains 40 images of new mothers from across East London.
She aimed to capture women in their own environments, and avoided choosing subjects based on their looks, race, or class.
The photographs capture subjects who are at once tender and startlingly strong. One can almost read the combination of expectation and anxiety balanced with hope and maternal nurturing in each face.
"I find the collection of images defiant and beautiful," Lewis writes, "challenging the expected vision of those first twenty-four hours, a pure celebration of what it means to be a mother."
We are fortunate enough to be able to present you with some of the images from "One Day Young."
