Jennifer Lopez Donates $1 Million To Help Puerto Rico In The Wake Of Hurricanes Irma And Maria

"What’s foremost in my mind and many others, is trying to figure out the best way to help."

Though Jennifer Lopez is known for being "Jenny from the block" of NYC's Bronx neighborhood, she has always been very vocal about her Puerto Rican heritage. Now, in the wake of destruction from hurricanes Irma and Maria, which left the Caribbean in desperate need of help, J.Lo is stepping up to help those in need in a major way.

"What's foremost in my mind and many others, is trying to figure out the best way to help," Lopez said in an Instagram video. "Our island of Puerto Rico has been hit by the two most devastating hurricanes we've ever seen, Irma and Maria. Today, Puerto Rico needs our help. I urge you to support and donate to the efforts of the first lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rosselló (UnitedforPuertoRico.com). Together, we can help rebuild our island and the Caribbean."

In addition to encouraging others to join together to help Puerto Rico and surrounding islands left ravaged by the recent string of natural disasters, the 48-year-old World of Dance creator and judge — who noted she has yet to hear from some of her family there — donated $1 million to hurricane relief efforts. Lopez announced the news at a press conference alongside New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Mets pitcher Seth Lugo, and fellow actress Rosie Perez.

"Lives have been lost. Power is down across the entire island. More than 15,000 people have been forced into shelters, and the storm has devastated the lives of thousands of others," Lopez said at the press conference — at which she used her bilingual talents to speak in both English and Spanish to reach as many people as possible. "Alex Rodriguez and I, who are both New Yorkers, are utilizing all our resources, and relationships in entertainment, sports, and business to garner support for Puerto Rican and Caribbean relief efforts."

Other celebrities using their star power to help Puerto Rico are Ricky Martin, Daddy Yankee, and Lopez's ex-husband Marc Anthony. Another A-lister helping out her home country is Salma Hayek who, last week, donated $100,000 to help those affected by recent earthquakes in Mexico.
