James Corden continued to prove what an awesome addition he is to the late-night lineup last night by performing a duet with Cyndi Lauper. This wasn't just any duet, though. In addition to being exactly as entertaining as you'd expect, the performance also drew attention to an issue on a lot of Americans' minds — the gender pay gap.
Donning matching pink hair, James and Cyndi reworked her timeless hit "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" into "Girls Just Want Equal Funds." The tune opens in much the same way as the original, but with a welcome feminist twist: "I come home in the morning light / My mother says, 'Why don't you make the same as a guy?'" Then James comes in with a message for his fellow men: "Guys, if she's mad, it's not PMS / It's 'cause you do the same job, but she's making less."
The song even manages to call out Hollywood, pointing out how unrealistic it is to have female characters run from danger in high heels. As Cyndi belts, "Girls, they want comfy shoes / And to be paid as much as the dudes."
Considering the U.S. Census Bureau reports that the average woman make 79 cents for every dollar a man does (with an even wider gap for women of color), you might want to consider putting this song on rotation at your next karaoke night.
