Stranded Mexican Bakery Staff Made 2 Days Worth Of Bread For Harvey Victims While Trapped

"They knew it was going to be needed."

When Hurricane Harvey trapped several employees of a Mexican bakery in Houston, Texas inside, the workers used their time wisely and began baking bread and other treats for those in need.

According to HuffPost, several members of the staff at El Bolillo Bakery's South Wayside Drive branch were stuck inside for two days because of flooding, but since the bakery itself remained dry and the power stayed on, they didn't let a minute or an ounce of flour go to waste. Instead, the four workers decided to make as many loaves of bread as possible for their community.

The publication notes the employees, who were rescued on August 28, used upwards of 4,200 pounds of flour to bake hundreds of loaves of bread and sheets of pan dulce.

"When they realized they were stuck, they decided to keep themselves busy and help the community and made as many loaves of bread as they could," Brian Alvarado, the manager of the South Wayside Drive location told The Independent. "By the time the owner managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that we took the loaves to loads of emergency centers across the city for people affected by the floods."

"They knew it was going to be needed,"  El Bolillo Bakery owner Kirk Michaelis told USA Today of the resourceful employees.

And keep in mind, the bakers did all of this knowing their own homes might have sustained damage from the hurricane-turned-tropical storm.

People around the world have been so moved by the baker's gesture that a GoFundMe page was established to help the employees cover any of their own storm-related expenses. It has already raised nearly $5,000.

"It's people like you who make us all proud!" wrote one man who donated to the cause.

The baker's selfless actions even caught the attention of former Mexican president Vicente Fox, who praised their actions.

As Houston begins to recover, multiple El Bolillo Bakery locations have opened their doors and provided bread and other food to people in need. As you can see from the video below, many displaced residents of Houston and the surrounding areas are grateful to El Bolillo Bakery and the chain's incredible, dedicated staff.

This is yet another example of a local business doing whatever it can to help Houston heal and rebuild. For more information on how you can help victims of Hurricane Harvey, please click here.
