Huggies Now Makes Tiny Diapers For Premature Babies Who Weigh As Little As Two Pounds

The diapers serve only a small population of babies, but they'll make a huge difference.

Having a baby can be stressful enough as it is, but parents of premature babies often have even more to worry about. Preemies are susceptible to many health problems after birth that can affect them in long-term ways, and they sometimes need to stay in the hospital for extended periods of time, often in the neonatal intensive care united (NICU).

These babies and their parents need all the comfort they can get, which is why diaper brand Huggies just launched Huggies Little Snugglers Nano Preemie Diapers — a new diaper line for prematurely born babies weighing as little as two pounds.

Fewer than 1.4 percent of babies born each year are this small, according to a press release for the diapers. However, the team at Huggies wanted to make sure they could offer these babies a safe, comfortable option. After all, diapers are often the only clothing that touches preemie baby's skin. Diapers that are too large can irritate premature babies fragile, underdeveloped skin. Huggies has just eliminated this issue, easing some of both the babies and their parents concerns.

"We're passionate about helping all babies thrive, especially the smallest and most fragile. This Huggies diaper reflects our ongoing commitment to deliver innovative solutions for the NICU," Eleonora Daireaux, vice president at Huggies North America, said in the press release. "After hearing of the need for a diaper that meets the special requirements of these babies, our expert teams in skin science, research, product safety and manufacturing were inspired. Knowing every second counts for these babies, the team acted quickly to bring Huggies Little Snugglers Nano Preemie Diapers from concept to launch in hospitals in just six months."

The tiny diapers have specially-sized fasters and a narrow, absorbent pad that provides a flexible fit for the baby. This makes it possible for the preemie to be comfortably positioned in a fetal tuck, with his or her arms and legs close to the body, according to the press release.

Huggies worked with NICU nurses across the country to develop the diapers. Each diaper is individually hand inspected by a Huggies' staff member before it goes into the box it's packaged in.

"Good-fitting diapers are important to the healthy growth and development of our smallest patients," Anjanette Lee, MS, CCC/SLP, NTMTC, an infant development specialist at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston, Texas, said in the press release. "In our experience, we found Huggies Little Snugglers Nano Preemie Diapers conformed to the baby's bottom without gapping or limiting leg movement. The thinner fasteners and less material at the waist provided a good fit for baby while still protecting their fragile skin."

These diapers join a line of products that have been specially designed for babies in the NICU, including "micro" and "little" sized diapers as well as wipes that were developed specifically for premature baby skin.
