America as a whole has deplorable eating habits. According to a 2013 report, the average daily diet in the U.S. contains 450 more calories than it did in 1970, contributing to the epic rise in obesity that we've witnessed over the last several decades. The social costs of this epidemic are staggering. One study found that a startling 18 percent of American deaths from 1986 to 2006 were attributable to obesity.
And it's not just a problem in the U.S. Rates of obesity around the world have doubled since 1980.
So how do we combat this trend? One way is to become more aware of what it is we're actually eating. When you watch this video, for instance, and see just how hot dogs are mass-produced, you might think twice next time you are tempted to eat one — and perhaps you'll be motivated to make a healthier choice.
