If you've been making a conscious effort to make healthier choices when it comes to what you put in your body, it may be time to start thinking about what you put on your body. Sure, you can solve some beauty bummers by adjusting your diet, but what about all the problems caused by the toxin-filled makeup you're applying to your skin every day? Perhaps, it's time you checked the ingredients in your foundation, mascara, eyeliner, and lipsticks. But be warned: You may not like what you see.
Luckily, there are many brands making strides in the green beauty department.
As more and more people start caring about the ingredients they put on their skin, more brands will be working to accommodate those customers. And we can already see the results of such demand. Cosmetic companies are developing formulas that are not only better for you skin, but better for the world, as many of the materials produced are free of harmful chemicals, free from animal testing, recyclable, and organic. On top of all that, the quality of such beauty products are not compromised.
We've listed out some of our favorite sustainable beauty brands below and how they're helping to make a difference in the natural beauty brand game.
1. Acure Organics
Acure Organics is a family owned and operated company founded on sustainable principles that aim to free its customers' personal care routine from the harmful toxins often found in beauty products, without sacrificing results. Their motto is "it's not enough to be natural, it also has to work."
They sell skin and hair care items made using plant and food based formulas and pure essential oils. All of their products are "free from animal testing, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, harmful preservatives and artificial colors," according to their website.
2. Antonym Cosmetics
Miami makeup artist Valerie Giraud started Antonym Cosmetics, which sells professional quality makeup brushes made of eco-friendly and cruelty-free materials and organic makeup. Because the makeup line was started by a professional makeup artist, you can be sure it's highly pigmented and luminous.
If you're in the market for new makeup brushes, Antonym's are the way to go. Their allergy-free and certified vegan brushes are made with synthetic bristles. They're super soft on your skin and their eco-friendly handles are made using sustainable bamboo.
Giraud has some advice for anyone looking to switch from their current makeup routine to a more natural one: "Do it slowly," she said on her company's website. "Start by changing the products that you use most often and then gradually change your entire collection. If you're not ready to make the daring move, at least avoid the following ingredients: Fragrance, Parabens, Petrolatum, Triclosan, Formaldehyde."
3. Juice Beauty
The base of Juice Beauty's products are made with — you guessed it — juice. Many other beauty product companies use alcohol, which can be drying, or petroleum, which can be laced with harmful chemicals. But Juice Beauty offers skincare and makeup options made up of juices jam-packed with antioxidants that rejuvenate your skin.
"We purchase the majority of our ingredients from local West Coast USDA Certified Organic farms so we can monitor the quality and limit fuel waste and then we manufacture many of our products with solar power," Juice Beauty said on their website. "We believe staying local is better for our community and eco-system. We believe harnessing sustainable energy is better for our planet."
4. NU Evolution
NU Evolution was started by a pair of beauty junkies who deeply care about their makeup and their health. Nadine Cormier and Sandra Anderson-Diaz created the luxury fashion brand to be on par with brands like NARS, Bobbi Brown, and Laura Mercier, but without any of the toxic ingredients often found in designer brand makeup.
"Not willing to settle for anything less than what they expect from other brands, they set out to create a
natural and organic cosmetic brand, with a color selection, innovative formulas and packaging that reflects their true passion for high fashion, beauty and pop culture from around the world," according to NU Evolution's website. "They stand behind all of the ingredients used in the products. Under no circumstances are they willing to sacrifice their health or yours for the sake of profits. They want women of all shades to be able to use the quality, stylish products they demand without compromising their well-being."
They boast that all of their products are made with organic ingredients, are cruelty-free and are made in the United States. With sleek packaging and effective formulas, their products have been featured during New York Fashion Week.
Bold brows are certainly having a very special moment in the beauty world right now. If you're looking to help your brows achieve their full potential without sacrificing your health or the environments, look no further than Ecobrow. The company was founded by celebrity makeup artist Marco Ochoa who knew he could do better than the brow products he had to work with.
"Through my research I discovered that there were only a few natural brow lines on the market — mostly pencils or powders — and my concern was that they either looked too ashy or too fake, neither of which are acceptable," he said on his website.
So, he set out to make an eco-conscious beauty line that he and other makeup artists would want to regularly use. Ecobrow sells mineral-based, paraben-free, and smudge-proof makeup that your beautiful brows will be thankful for.
After relatives of his went through skin cancer scares, COOLA founder Chris Birchby committed himself to making a difference in skincare and sun protection. His products rely on organic, naturally sourced, and green ingredients that are sensitive on the skin but still protect you from harmful UV rays.
COOLA creates skin protection products for your face, body, and lips. Their formulas "incorporate a Farm to Face® sourcing philosophy, using the freshest and most natural ingredients whenever possible," according to their website. "Look for our organic formulas that contain over 70 percent certified organic ingredients and are easily identified by our organic seals. Additionally, we formulate with Plant Protection®, which allows us to achieve clinically tested, broad spectrum and antioxidant-rich protection while using fewer traditional actives. Better for your skin, better for the environment."
The company creates small batches of their formulas in California, citing that this method allows them to "reformulate often, taking advantage of new developments in sun science."
When it comes to natural lip care, ILIA has got you covered. The cosmetics company started out with just a collection of lip conditioners which are certainly still their stars. However, the line quickly grew into a full health conscious line of beauty products. They now sell a wide range of natural beauty products. Their products are formulated with up to 85 percent bioactive organic ingredients that help repair and rejuvenate your skin.
"Somebody once said to me, that because it's organic it's good for you, and it doesn't matter if it doesn't work as well as the mainstream stuff," founder Sasha Plavsic said on ILIA's website. "I intend to change their mind."
8. Jersey Shore Cosmetics
Jersey Shore Cosmetics is another safer alternative to the toxin-filled makeup brands that line the shelves of your favorite beauty shop. Founder Jacquelyn Foster Quattro was inspired by the beauty of the southern New Jersey beaches she grew up on when she created this company.
Like Acure Organics, Jersey Shore Cosmetics is family-owned and operated. Their eco-friendly products are formulated using botanicals, essential oils, and natural fragrances. They are paraben-free, phthalate-free, sulfate-free, petrochemical free, and free of artificial colors. They use recyclable packaging and never test on animals.
"We are passionate about providing effective, high quality natural products using only the highest quality, toxin-free ingredients. Every product is formulated with ingredients from nature that are scientifically proven to deliver the best results," Jersey Shore Cosmetics said on their website. "We care about your health and our goal is to not only help you look good, but to help you make healthy choices, while also protecting the planet."
9. W3LL PEOPLE
Austin-based W3LL PEOPLE was founded by what they call a "uncommon beauty dream team" made up of a makeup guru, cosmetic dermatologist, and "tree-hugging" entrepreneur. Their products aim to provide minimalist makeup that gives you that coveted "no-makeup" look.
Nearly all of their products contain aloe vera to help sooth, moisturize, and nourish the skin. What their products don't include are artificial chemicals, preservatives, or petroleums.
"Our modern approach to beauty is built on simplicity, authenticity and performance," W3LL PEOPLE said on its website. "With W3LL PEOPLE you don't just look good, you feel good."
