For horror fans of a certain age, Goosebumps holds a special place in our hearts as the series that first got us hooked on all things creepy and crawly. Just mention Night of the Living Dummy or Monster Blood, and the memories alone are enough to send shivers down our spines. The first trailer for the Goosebumps movie, starring Jack Black, looks more silly than scary, but we'll take R.L. Stine's work in whatever form we can get it.
The premise of the flick is pretty meta: Black plays Stine, the author of the Goosebumps series. When new kid Zach (Dylan Minnette) goes to Stine's house to hang out with Stine's daughter, Hannah (Odeya Rush), he accidentally unleashes all of Stine's fictional creations upon their town. The kids and the writer must work together to save everyone from werewolves, abominable snowmen, malicious gnomes and plenty of the other legendary creatures that appear in one or more of the 62 Goosebumps novellas Stine wrote throughout his career.
It sounds like the ultimate nightmare from our childhood. At least in real life, we could close the books and leave the ghosts and ghouls behind. But as the Goosebumps trailer shows, some monsters have a way of following you around. At least until you can figure out how to get them safely back in their books, where they belong.
