Every two minutes, another American is sexually assaulted.
That astounding number is not just unique to the United States, either. Sexual assault is a global problem, and one that affects all genders, children and adults. According to RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network), there are about 293,000 sexual assault cases in the United States every year.
That's why the issue of sexual assault is such an important one. What has come from our new willingness to speak about and address the issue is also new knowledge, some of which can be very hard to hear. For instance, 44 percent of those sexual assault victims are under the age of 18 years old.
Thats why Full Stop, a foundation for sexual and domestic violence, created a video highlighting a woman who was sexually assaulted twice as a child, once at 9 years old and again as 16 years old. Both were men she knew and trusted.
"I was feeling ashamed of myself," she says in the video. "I started wearing loose clothing."
Today, the woman — whose name isn't revealed — says she is happily married and still in the process of healing.
