Early on Monday, Serena Williams bested Venus Williams with a 6-4, 6-3 result to advance to the Wimbledon quarterfinals, sealing another victory against her older sister. Since they emerged on the scene, the Williams sisters have had a monumental impact on tennis and the sports world at large. In what is perhaps the most beloved sibling rivalry in America, here are five times Venus and Serena Williams made tennis history.
Monday's game was one in a long line of showdowns against each other. Over the past two decades, they have shared wins and triumphs over one another, both etching their respective names onto the tennis history books. Both have traded the World No. 1 title back and forth, and won an impressive number of Grand Slams and Olympic medals. In one of America's most fascinating professional rivalries — the Williams sisters have met in eight Grand Slam singles finals — the two remain close, showing up to support each other's games, even when the other has been knocked out earlier. "I think we probably have the most respect for each other than anyone else on the tour," Venus has said. "We both want each other to win when we're not playing each other."
In celebration of their outstanding success and sportsmanship, here are the five times the Williams sisters made history in the sport.
1. Venus Williams is the first Black American woman to become World No. 1 during the Open Era.
The Women's Tennis Association ranked her the best women's player in tennis in 2002.
2. Serena Williams holds the most titles in tennis of any active player in the sport.
The reigning World No. 1 has the most major singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles combined amongst active players. Many consider her the greatest women's tennis player of all time.
Venus holds the second most titles.
3. The Williams sisters each hold a record 4 Olympic Gold titles.
Venus and Serena both have won an all-time record of one Olympic gold in women's singles and three in women's doubles.
4. They both are two of three women's players who have made the finals of all four Grand Slams.
Venus, Serena and Russian player Maria Sharapova are the only three who managed this feat.
5. The sisters have won a total of 13 Grand Slam doubles titles playing together.
They are also undefeated in Grand Slam finals.
As the Wimbledon tournament progresses, we're looking forward to seeing Venus cheer on her sister in the stands.
