Considering nearly all shampoos out there come in a plastic bottle, you've probably never thought twice about the packaging. But now there's a better option for you, the environment, and your bathroom.
Sustainable beauty product company Ethique offers shampoos, conditioners, soaps, and shaving creams that come in the form of a solid bar. Gone are the days of grabbing a big chunk of plastic in your shower and squeezing out too much liquid. Instead, you use the product just as you would a bar of soap, adding water to create a lather.
Every one of Ethique's products is made without any plastic packaging. They use biodegradable ingredients and wrappers to help save the environment from unnecessary, harmful waste.
Their super concentrated bars are made using only natural ingredients such as cocoa butter, chamomile oil, and peppermint.
The company was founded by bio-chemist Breanne West. "I'm not passionate about makeup, cosmetics or fashion," she said on the company's website. "I love science and the environment and if I wasn't doing this, I would ideally be wading through the Amazon, studying the creatures that live there, but of course avoiding the spiders. I am passionate about the values Ethique stands for and the change we are creating in the world with products that are waste free, natural and effective. I am insanely proud that we have prevented more than 53,000 bottles from being made and disposed of thus far and our next goal is one million."
"I have been able to use the skills I have to create a business that has a positive tangible effect on the environment and that feels amazing.”
According to Ethique, most other conditioners can be made of up to 90 percent water. So, instead of making you pay for water, they jam pack all the natural ingredients you need to get your hair looking and feeling fresh into a super concentrated bar. Each of these bars saves an estimated one liter of water per bar.
"Ethique's dedication to sustainable beauty practices has prevented the manufacture and disposal of more than 60,000 plastic containers worldwide," its says on the company website.
Don't care about the environment? Well, despite the fact that you probably should, Ethique's products are also good for your wallet.
"Solid bars last between three to six times longer (depending on the product) than bottled products because they're super-concentrated. You add the water not us, and yes our solid beauty bars foam when you are in the shower applying the product." You'll be getting much more bang for your buck.
They also help to keep things less cluttered in your bathroom. Each solid bar takes up significantly less space than your average shampoo and conditioner bottle.
Many other beauty care companies are making strides to help save the environment and your skin. For example, Nohbo, a company with a similar mission to Ethique's, makes plastic-free shampoo balls. Hopefully, the market will soon be saturated with these types of eco-friendly beauty care products.
It would really be a win win for both you and the planet.
