The reality of being a woman with an online dating profile is that you'll receive a few too many ridiculous pickup lines. Sometimes they're funny or sweet, but many times they're creepy or aggressive.
Instead of just letting these messages go, Emmie Tsumura is using the pickup lines she gets on dating sites and transforming them into an illustration art series. The Toronto-based illustrator and graphic designer posts these illustrations on her Instagram page, ok_cucumber. While many of the messages she illustrates are weird and inappropriate, some of them also shed light on how difficult and awkward online dating can be.
Many people have reacted positively to seeing Tsumura's work. "It's like when we talk about it together, we can flip an unpleasant experience into a burst of laughter," Tsumura told the Huffington Post. "It's the best. I feel incredibly lucky for all the interest in this project."
Perhaps people who see these messages in a different context than they were originally conveyed will realize that they can do better when it comes to online dating. Hopefully, at least a few of them will finally learn the difference between "your" and "you're."
