Ellen Degeneres, host of The Ellen Show, comedian, LGBT advocate and pro-selfie taker, sent a powerful message of hope to all those who feel different.
Upon accepting her surfboard award for "Choice Comedian" at this year's Teen Choice Awards (and after cracking a few jokes about heading to the beach with it,) she got somber and addressed the crowd.
"It feels good to be chosen, but there was a time in my life when I was not chosen, I was the opposite of chosen, because I was different."
"I want to make sure everyone knows that what makes you different right now is what makes you stand out later in life."
"You should be proud of being different. Be proud of who you are."
And lastly ...
"Fitting in is not really all that matters. It's being unique and being who you are."
She also revealed that she and wife Porcia De Rossi celebrated seven years together that very day.
