Hurricane Harvey Destroyed Their School’s Gym. So Ellen Gave One Of Her Biggest Gifts Yet.

"You always have a choice to make the best out of a situation."

Last August, Hurricane Harvey ripped through the Texas coast, leaving cities like Rockport devastated in its wake. Parts of Rockport-Fulton High School were hit hard, including its gym, which was completely destroyed. On yesterday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellen surprised students affected by Hurricane Harvey with some exciting news.

With the help of Lowe's, DeGeneres is donating $1 million to rebuilding the Rockport-Fulton High School's beloved "Gold Gym."

Throughout the segment, girls from the school's volleyball team opened up about how they felt after finding out their gym was demolished.

"The moment I realized how bad it was, when we got pictures of our gym, and it was just everywhere," one athlete said through tears.

"It was like a second home for us, and to see it destroyed was so devastating," another added.

The community came together to in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey to help one another — and the girls' coaches didn't let the lost gym keep them from having a volleyball season. With help from nearby schools, the girls managed to play the entire season. "You always have a choice to make the best out of a situation," one athlete said. "Having that positive mindset and wanting to make it better is really what got us through Harvey."

"I know that your gym was more than just a gym to all of you. It was important to your entire community," DeGeneres said, before announcing that $1 million would be donated to rebuilding it.

This isn't the first time DeGeneres has helped victims of Hurricane Harvey. She donated $25,000 of her own money to the Red Cross and the show donated an additional $25,000. She also donated $25,000 to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas. In addition, she presented a $1 million check courtesy of Walmart to J.J. Watt's Hurricane Harvey relief fund.
