As a country of 1.2 billion people, it is no doubt that India faces environmental issues, especially in the larger cities. As the country's population and economy continues to grow, the pressure on natural resources is increasing, as is the level of pollution. To improve the situation, it will take more than just government regulation.
Each person in the country will have to contribute, and a man named Dhananjoy Chakraborty is doing just that.
The 40-year-old taxi driver has created a garden on the roof of his taxi and placed eight potted plants behind the rear seat inside. He has also changed the interior to a green color to further complement the theme of the taxi and his message to save the environment.
His taxi, which he has named "Sobuj Rath," otherwise known as the "Green Chariot," is grabbing the interest of many people. Instead of asking for more money than the metered fare, he asks his passengers to plant a sapling each.
"Nature is our best friend. Don’t destroy it."Dhananjoy Chakraborty
His love of trees and Mother Nature is hard to miss. Not only is he helping people realize the importance of the cause, but he is also providing an additional benefit to his passengers — the bed of grass on the roof of his taxi cools the interior providing for a very comfortable ride.
