Last night at the Billboard Music Awards, Demi Lovato gave a knockout performance of her hit "Cool for the Summer." But it's what she was wearing onstage that really got people talking. Demi sported a black mesh T-shirt bearing a bold symbol — one denoting gender-inclusive bathrooms. It was a simple way to send an important and timely message about transgender rights.
Demi lends her voice to the public outcry over HB2, North Carolina's controversial "bathroom bill," which bans transgender people from using the bathroom corresponding to their gender identity. In April, Demi and Nick Jonas canceled the North Carolina dates on their upcoming Future Now Tour in protest of the bill.
GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis released a statement following Demi's performance praising the young singer for her show of support for the LGBT community:
"Demi Lovato continues to be a fearless ally for LGBT equality and acceptance. By wearing her support for the transgender community, Lovato is raising critical visibility for vulnerable LGBT North Carolinians and sending an invaluable message of support to transgender people everywhere."
Wondering where you can get your own version of Demi's shirt? If you're planning to see Demi and Nick in concert this summer, you're in luck! GLAAD also announced that replicas will be sold during the tour, with proceeds going to LGBT organizations in North Carolina.
