'The reason why I decided to do this photoshoot was because when I think of confident, I think of many things, but one thing in particular is feeling comfortable in your own skin," singer Demi Lovato says in a video interview for Vanity Fair.
Lovato's recent photoshoot for the magazine is a simple one: there's no clothing, no makeup, and no retouching — something we don't normally see from the pages of popular fashion magazines.
But it's not just about showing people what she looks like without makeup or how well she can contend with Kim K's nude shoot for Paper Magazine.
It's about so much more than that.
"I would have never thought that I would have ever gotten to a place in my life where I could feel comfortable doing that. It's empowering, and it shows other women that you can get to a place where you can overcome the obstacles of body images issues and you can feel comfortable and confident in your skin," Lovato says.
In the video, Lovato opens up about her former struggles with eating disorders and says that by working on her spirituality, her soul, and her body, she got into a happier, more loving relationship with herself.
"What does it mean to be confident? It means letting go, being authentic, saying I don't give a fuck and this is who I am. I want to show the side of me that's real, that's liberated, that's free... Let's do it here, let's do it now," Patrick Ecclesine reports Lovato saying as she prepared for the shoot.
The photos are honest, gorgeous, and most of all, inspire body positivity for women everywhere.
And that's something to celebrate.
