Woman Details What It's Like To Love Yourself Unconditionally — And It's A Beautiful Thing

"The more that you make your body happy, the more it will make you happy back."

"When I was younger, I wanted to be somebody else," says a woman named Melissa Jefferson, speaking directly to the camera.

But that's not the case for her anymore.

Jefferson, who goes by the stage name Lizzo, opens up about learning to love her body in a video for BuzzFeed titled "What It Feels Like To Be Confident in Your Own Skin."

In the video, she details her journey from self-doubt to self-acceptance, the ways in which the media influenced her beliefs about beauty, and how her new perspective makes being herself a wonderful experience.

Here are five important quotes from Lizzo's video we believe everyone, women in particular, should hear:

"The only standard of beauty I had was in television and in mainstream media. I would fantasize about being someone else. I read a lot of books and I watched a lot of cartoons, but that body type and that perception of beauty is literally fake."

"Women have it hard even if [they are] the media's definition of 'beauty.' I learned that celebrating our differences instead of fighting about them is the key to change and growth.

"What it took was kind of throwing myself out there. I made a choice to commit myself to who I am. Little things about myself that I wanted to change, I realized this is it. It ain't goin' nowhere."

"But that's the beauty of beauty — is that it's not just one thing. It changes every day. And today I feel good. When you go to sleep thinking about how excited you are to be you the next day, it makes waking up such an experience."

"The more that you make your body happy the more it will make you happy back. Stay strong, stay powerful, stay beautiful, unconditionally."
