Coffee, for many, is an everyday ritual. Monday mornings wouldn't be the same without it, college students practically swim in it during finals, and cool cafes pump out soy cappuccinos like it's nobody's business.
But a new study reveals coffee could actually be life-changing.
Research shows regularly drinking coffee could help save the lives of those affected by cancer — particularly, colon cancer. In comparison to non-coffee drinkers, "those who drank four or more cups of coffee were less lively to have their cancers recur, [that's] about 42 percent, and they were about 33 percent less likely to die from their cancer," Dr. Scott Steele at UH Seidman Cancer Center tells CBS News.
The findings come from a 2015 study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, where about 1,000 patients with stage III colon cancer were analyzed. Other studies point out coffee could help those with melanoma, liver, or advanced prostate cancer, according to the NY Daily News.
"It's important to note, however, that this study was only designed to find an association between coffee consumption and a lower risk of colon cancer recurrence or death from colon cancer. It wasn't designed to prove a cause-and-effect relationship," CBS News' Alan Mozes writes.
In the NY Daily News piece, Charles Fuchs, director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at Dana-Farber notes those regular coffee-drinkers being treated for colon cancer should keep on drinking, but the study's findings shouldn't encourage non-coffee drinkers to start drinking before consulting a doctor.
Doctors remind us there could be other aspects of the coffee, besides caffeine, that help deal with colon cancer. But one doctor tells CBS he thinks the benefits of coffee in relation to cancer are not entirely clear.
Fuchs told CBS. "...we need to look at this some more. And meanwhile, there are plenty of healthy lifestyle choices that can help, including avoiding obesity, avoiding a high-carb diet, and avoiding sugary beverages, to name a few."
And a cup of joe actually does a lot of other good...
Coffee has also been linked to other health benefits, aside from this latest news. It gives you energy (of course), it can reduce the risk of stroke or Alzheimer's Disease, its smell can help reduce stress and it is an excellent source of antioxidants.
