While there are people in the fashion industry who are trying to change the way we think about models, it's still far from perfect. Clothing designer Becca McCharen of Chromat defied the fashion world during the Fall 2015 New York Fashion Week with a runway featuring a diverse group of models that you won't usually find anywhere else.
"I'm so against all white, straight, skinny girl runways," McCharen told Fashonista. "That just doesn't reflect my reality and who I am and who the Chromat woman is. And so for every season, we've been all about strong, powerful women."
Chromat featured women of different races, and women with curvy, athletic and slender bodies. They even included transgender women.
"For me, it's such a powerful story because they're the ultimate in strength — having to overcome so much just to walk down the street," she said to Bushwick Daily. "So [for transgender women] to storm the runway, that's just a really incredible thing and I'm in awe."
