In a new video for BuzzFeed, two teens are given the opportunity to have their dream makeovers completed on camera.
Both participants, 13-year-old Kristina and 17-year-old Skylar are transgender, and, in the video, open up about their experiences, explaining how they've found confidence, self-acceptance, and beyond.
Kristina, who transitioned when she was going into the sixth grade, says that prior to her transition, she had always felt insecure about her looks, "because I wasn't really able to completely be myself and I wasn't able to dress how I wanted to."
"Once I was able to wear the clothes that I wanted to wear, it definitely boosted my self-confidence," she adds.
"I was known for being the third girl to play football at my school," Skylar shares. "After a while, I didn't want to be the third girl to play — I wanted to be Skylar."
In addition to clothes, people from the trans community often express the importance of makeup as a tool for expression as it can help them feel more like the gender they identify with. That said, as the teens tell their stories, the video footage gives us a behind-the-scenes look into their makeovers, which include different makeup and hair styles: a pinup look for Kristina and "a style of male clothing that would look good on me," per Skylar's request.
After the makeover reveal, Kristina and Skylar speak directly to other people going through similar changes:
"If you are a trans person that is in the beginning stages of transition or is just coming out to their family, I want to let you know that it's gonna be scary and that it's gonna seem really, really hard, but once you are able to live as your true and authentic self it is all going to be worth it," Kristina says.
"It can lead just to happiness," Skylar concludes.
