You would think that childhood monsters are named that for a reason and would just disappear over time, just like bad acne and crippling shyness around girls or boys.
Well, this artist proves otherwise.
U.K.-based illustrator Brian Coldrick says he's been admiring spooky comics and horror stories for a long time, until one day an idea to create a series of his own was born. But instead of writing extensive narratives, Coldrick's goal was to give the creeps with one shot and one shot only.
"I've been reading lots of 'real-life' spooky stories online and I like how they tend to boil down to one unsettling event or scenario. Leaving more things to audience's imagination can be a wonderful trick in horror," Coldrick told A Plus.
Thus, after some creative iteration, an ongoing illustration series titled "Behind You"came into being. And believe us when we say — getting shivers down your spine will never be the same again.
As Coldrick puts it, "each page is simply a character with someone, or something, behind them and one line of text."
Most of his images come in animated GIF format, which really adds a thick layer of creepiness.
Coldrick says the process of coming up with scenarios for each image varies each time:
"I might want to use a particular setting and the monster can come later. Sometimes it's the creature that is clear in my head and everything is built around it. Sometimes there is a hint of loneliness to the victim's situation and the thing behind them can be a personification of their fears or weaknesses. Usually, though, it's just an opportunity to draw a wacky monster!" he told A Plus.
