The team behind the YouTube prank channel Trollstation wanted to see firsthand how people would react to a woman breastfeeding in public. So, they decided to conduct a social experiment where an actress breastfeeds her child while traveling on the Tube in London.
Right away, she receives some stares, but it's one man in particular that sparks controversy.
"Excuse me, you're not breastfeeding, are you?" he asks.
"I'm not trying to be argumentative or anything, but I feel a little bit uncomfortable about it." He then asks her to move to another train car, and do it somewhere else.
The woman refuses, which makes him get more aggressive. He complains she should've fed her child earlier, and that she's "exposing" herself. Other passengers chime in, asking the man to calm down and back off. In particular, a couple sitting across from them defend the "mom." They tell the man he should be the one moving to another car if he's uncomfortable. "You're doing nothing wrong," one of them says to the mother. "This guy has a bit of an issue."
One passenger eventually sits between the argumentative man and woman to protect the breastfeeding woman.
There's some more arguing before the cameraman reveals that the whole scenario is a social experiment But there's a twist: The aggressive man is also an actor, and the real experiment is to test how bystanders react to the altercation.
All the people who stood up for the mother were not actors. They stood up for her simply because they thought it was the right thing to do.
And that's really nice to see.
