This Breast Cancer Survivor and Her Daughter With Alopecia Show That Bald Is Beautiful

"I was able to truly appreciate how beautiful and strong my daughter is.”

A mother-daughter photo shoot has gone viral thanks to the powerful message behind it: bald is beautiful.

Breast cancer survivor Kristi Tavenner, who lost all of her hair due to chemotherapy, and her 7-year-old daughter Rose, who lost her hair due to alopecia — a common autoimmune skin disease that causes people to lose hair on various parts of the body — embraced their baldness in a stunning photo series shot by Kellie Rose Photography.

Photographer Kellie Rose Pizza shared the beautiful images and the story behind them, on the Love What Matters Facebook page. "Rose began going out fully bald when all her hair fell out a few years ago," she wrote on the post. "It was beautiful to hear from Kristi about how Rose helped her to be brave when she began to lose her hair during chemotherapy treatments. They are two of the most beautiful people I've met, inside and out. They are here to show everyone that BALD IS BEAUTIFUL!"

Tavenner was diagnosed back in April after detecting a cancerous lump on her right breast. It was then that she felt inspired to do this shoot. "The idea for the shoot came about when Kellie and I were hanging out right after I was diagnosed," Tavenner told A Plus. "We were talking about how unique of an experience it would be for me to have a small glimpse into what Rose deals with every day. And that if I did need chemo, and did lose my hair, we would definitely have a shoot to document that (hopefully)  once in a lifetime period in our lives."

Cosmopolitan reported the Tennessee mom underwent  a double mastectomy, four rounds of chemotherapy, and is now thankfully cancer-free. Last Thursday, the 38-year-old underwent breast reconstruction surgery, completing her recovery plan.

In the photos, Tavenner and her little girl are seen on a grassy location, wearing matching pink outfits, embracing in the warm sunshine. The emotional shots tugged at the heartstrings of many. The viral photo received thousands of comments from people around the world, praising Tavenner and her daughter for their strength and love, while others shared their own similar experiences.

"I worked for a Hospice for a number of years and learned early on how beautiful bald is. It's not about the bald, It is about the EYES. There is no longer any distraction from the window to the soul of a person. That is where the true beauty lies," wrote one Facebook user.

"Hair doesn't define your beauty ladies your beautiful hearts do!!!" said another.

"They look like goddess and warrior princess! They look magnificent! #BaldBeauties is their name," praised another.

Tavenner had no idea the photos would go viral, as she only took the photos to share this very special moment with her daughter.  Pizza responded to all of the attention her Facebook post received, saying, "Thank you all so much for your kind comments for my friends! Rose is such a sweet and sensitive soul and I know that seeing all these beautiful words will help to keep her feeling powerful and brave!"

"The whole experience of the photo shoot was very peaceful and intimate, almost like taking a break from everything that was going on," Tavenner told A Plus. "We were the only people at the big, gorgeous farm; the sun was starting to set. For the first time in a long while it was just me and Rose, and we were able to connect in a way that's difficult when you're busy with life. I was able to truly appreciate how beautiful and strong my daughter is."
