16 Breast Cancer Survivors Confess How Beating The Disease Has Affected Them

"It's been 10 years and I'm tired of being a breast cancer survivor. I need to be defined by something else."

About 1 in 8 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Currently, there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. Many of those women have vastly different experiences fighting the disease and then dealing with the aftermath.

Several survivors used the Whisper app to share personal accounts of what it can feel like to beat breast cancer. From feeling deeply appreciative to feeling distasteful toward their bodies, their confessions show that there's no one way to be a survivor. We hope sharing these responses can help other breast cancer survivors realize that their reactions are perfectly normal and bring awareness to their friends and family.
