Boyfriend Creates Thoughtful DIY Gift For Girlfriend With Depression And Anxiety

“This will hopefully help [her] to regain control in some aspects and push her to take breaks and become more focused on herself."

It can be difficult to know the right thing to do for a loved one living with anxiety or depression. While professional treatment and medication may be helpful, a support system of family and friends can be just as significant. Last week, one Reddit user showed how meaningful a thoughtful gift can be to someone experiencing mental health issues.  

Reddit user bovadeez posted a gift he handmade for his girlfriend who is living with anxiety and depression. He filled a jar of popsicle sticks meant to bring her comfort during difficult times. He wrote a handwritten message on each stick, and color-coded them so they fit into particular categories. 



In the comments section of the Reddit thread, he explained what the different colors mean. 

"Each 'category' is color coded, so for example, orange are inspirational quotes from poets, political figures, philosophers, and humanitarians across time. Yellow reminders are positive words to help you through the day things like 'you're beautiful' and 'it's OK to ask for help,'" he explained. "The purple ones are tips to help her relax things like, 'take a break' while she's working on her master's or 'listen to your favorite song.' I put a fine tipped sharpie in there with the blank ones so she record moments when she's the happiest and then she can pull one of those later when she needs it." 

He mentioned that this isn't his original idea, but that he saw it on social media first.

His post has been viewed over 350,000 times so far and will hopefully inspire others to make thoughtful gifts for their loved ones struggling with invisible illnesses.

After another Reddit user mentioned passing the idea along,  user bovadeez responded by saying, "Yes, please do! Living with someone that completely shuts down from both of these problems, I'm trying to see if it'll help. She sometimes gets so caught up in what she's doing, she becomes overwhelmed and doesn't even realize it. I'm hoping that this will help her. Even a little is a lot." 

This DIY project is pretty simple one that may be able to make a positive difference for some people, but be warned: it can get a little messy. "I'm almost 30 and have the penmanship of a 7-year-old haha. I considered doing print out labels, but I really wanted this to have a touch of personality to it," he wrote. "I can assure you my hands are covered in Magic Marker and fine-tipped Sharpie." 

Depression and anxiety disorders are among the most common mental Illnesses experienced by people in the United States, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Most of us know someone who is living with them. Let's do what we can to show them we care. A little DIY project can go a long way.
