5 Years After The Marathon Bombings, A Group Of Runners Proves They're Still #BostonStrong

In memory of the three dead and hundreds injured.

Nearly 30,000 runners are competing in the (very rainy) Boston Marathon today, but it was a much smaller group of runners who paid tribute to the tragedy that shook the city five years ago and reminded us just how #BostonStrong these people are.

Zoom Multisport, the city's triathlon team, started the #BostonRun just two weeks after the 2013 bombings on April 15 that left three dead and at least 260 others wounded near the finish line. Now, on the fifth anniversary of that fateful day, the group — which consists of some who were able to cross the finish line that day and others who didn't — laced up for another outing.

Greg Soutiea, one of the organizers, told CNN that the first year between 10 and 15 people took part. This year, there were about 150. These folks needed "closure," Soutiea said, so this was a way to "come together … and support each other."

Here's Zoom Multisport's post from this year's #BostonRun (swipe to see the map):

"We were all affected by the tragic events that occurred on a day that has always been so special to us," the club's Instagram post reads. "Today we ran our 6th annual #BostonRun to remember those who we lost, those who were unable to run, those who fought to protect us, & for those who will toe the starting line tomorrow to fulfill their hopes & dreams."

Zoom Multisport aren't the only ones keeping this day at the forefront of everyone's minds. The city of Boston held a moment of silence in honor of the 2013 terrorist attack at 2:49 p.m. on Sunday as part of the fifth-anniversary remembrance.

On the second anniversary of the catastrophe, the city of Boston named April 15 "One Boston Day" and, just last year, there was Stronger — starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany — that told the real-life story of Jeff Bauman, a man who was injured in the Boston Marathon bombing whose recovery became a beacon of hope for the entire city.
